Year One

Spring Term 2024  

Welcome back to you all. We hope you have had a love Christmas and New Year.   

This term we will be starting a new curriculum in reading, writing, spelling Science, History, Geography, Art and DT. All other subjects will be the same as what we were previously doing. If you have any questions please come in and ask. 

English 

This term we will be looking at texts the tale of Peter Rabbit, Look Up and Here We Are. In writing we will be learning about Calligrams and shape poems, recounts from personal experience, informal letters, Poetry, stories with familiar settings. 

Maths 

In Maths we will be learning about calculation strategies, numbers to 50, addition to 20, fractions and measuring length and mass. 

Foundation Subjects 

Science learning will be about materials and revisiting work on animals. DT will be about bread. Geography will cover continents, seas and oceans, poles, the equator countries capital cities and hot and cold places. Art will be looking at textiles. History will be looking at Mary Anning and David Attenborough. 

PE 

PE days will be Tuesday and Thursday. This half term will be gymnastics and health and wellbeing. After half term we will be developing ball skills using hands and feet. 

Homework 

Children will bring reading books home to read and share. These will be changed weekly. Ideally children will 4-5 times a week for 10 minutes at home. Please complete the reading record books to show that they have read.  Spelling Shed, Numbots and Learning with Parents are all activities children can complete at home. Passwords should all be in children’s reading record books. We will also start using the Microsoft accounts during the term. Sometimes additional activities may be sent on paper. These are all to reinforce school learning.  

Children often have things to bring home so please send book bags into school daily. Reading days may also be changed so send books in every day.  

Children can also bring a water bottle in with them. If they want to bring in a piece of fruit for break, they can. Fruit is provided but children sometimes would like their own choice.
